Los Mercaderes restaurant is pricey and full of tourists, but for good reason, the food and wine are pretty good. Located just off Plaza Vieja its a private restaurant with great staff and excellent service.
We were heading for a different restaurant this night, but changed our minds last minute and decided to splash out and try the Paladar Los Mercaderes Restaurant as I had heard good things about it.
Not so easy to see is the rather small front door with just the sign and a guy standing there to ring the bell to alert your arrival to the upstairs wait staff.
Two flights of stairs and youre in the restaurant which is quite brightly light with a duo playing music to the side.
Waiters buzz around and get us seated in a cramped area at the far end of the restaurant. We managed to move to a table with more room which was much better. The main dining area is pretty tight too, they really need more room in this place. If you book ahead you can get a good table for sure.
The service is very good with our waiter speaking great English. The menu is quite small which is a nice change, but pretty expensive for sure.
I ordered the Beef Tenderloin pieces in Blue Cheese & Green Pepper Sauce at $21 CUC, but as it doesnt come with anything else you need to order a side dish, we both ordered the sauteed vegetables at $3 CUC.
He ordered the days special which our waiter proudly kept telling us was the Organic fillet of Pork in crusted seeds and Mojito sauce at $24 CUC, again with the extra side dish.
We ordered Mojitos at $4.50 CUC, which is really expensive as they were no bigger or better than a lot of other places we have been too.
The sauce on my beef was totally excellent and I loved it, however the beef, although nice, was still a bit chewy, veg was good. The pork dish was really nice but also was a bit chewy too. This is Cuba of course so getting good meat we know is really hard. All in all it was a very nice meal.
If you’re after somewhere really quiet and romantic then this is not quite the right place, but if you’re after some pretty good food and don’t mind paying the price then go for it.
The wine list was impressive for a Cuban restaurant.
