Casa del Veguero

I booked Casa del Veguero in Vinales because it was on a small tobacco farm and not in town. Excellent choice, the food was amazing, only 10 min walk to town and the hosts were very friendly.

Even though the pin marker on the Airbnb map is not in the right place, I quickly spotted the big sign for Casa del Veguero as we drove right past it just before Vinales town.

A quick u turn and we arrived at Casa del Veguero at around 4pm.

First thing we noticed after being in Havana for the last 4 weeks was how lovely and quiet it was here. The air was fresh and the view of their small tobacco farm was a very welcome change.

Reiniely and Ismelis were our hosts at their Casa del Veguero. Ismelis can’t really speak any english but her husband Reiniely is not too bad.

We got a very good run down on all the activities to do in Vinales of which our hosts can book it all. We asked them to book in the horse riding tour- add a link to this page for the next day which was no problem at all. The rest of the things to do in Vinales – add a link to this page, we did ourselves with the car.

Our room was separate to the house and had it’s own entrance. Inside we had 2 double beds a lovely big bathroom with hot and cold water plus a fridge (empty). There was also air con plus a fan which all worked perfectly.

Our Opinion

For only $25 NZ ($18 USD) this casa was excellent value.

Our hosts looked after us very well and the food was totally excellent. Would highly recommend staying here. TIP: don’t buy the Guava Rum from Casa del Veguero, they charge $15 CUC but in Playa Larga the exact same bottle was only $3 CUC.

Eating Experience

On our first night we went into town and had dinner at El Olivo Restaurant which wasn’t too bad but after breakfast and lunch at the casa we decided the food was too good and had every breakfast and dinner there.

There was always too much food, our hosts would have preferred us to eat more but we just couldn’t squeeze it it.

Breakfast consisted of 2 eggs cooked to our liking, fresh bread, fresh fruit, delicious homemade coconut jam, coffee and sometimes what they call Pancakes, but we would call it a muffin.

All for $4 CUC each.

For dinner we were asked what type of meat or fish we would like, one night we had pork which was super tender and really tasty. Next night was chicken drumsticks, again tender and tasty, last night was fish.

We could have had lobster but not so keen on this. We loved the local potato which looks like a thick white stem cut in half. The beans were always tasty. Nothing had too much salt – it was all perfect.

Dinner was $8 CUC each washed down with a cold Cristal Beer at $2 CUC.
