Busuanga Island

Busuanga Island – The Island Hoppers Paradise

Busuanga Island is one of the main Palawan attractions for further island hopping. It is the second largest Island in the Palawan province and provides a wide variety of activities for the traveller.

The largest town on Busuanga Island is Coron, in the southwest. Many of the hotels on the island are situated there. Others are spread along the coast, around the northwest and northeast of the island. Additionally, there are some resorts on the smaller islands surrounding it.

Palawan hotels are in the middle of what some would call a tropical paradise. Prices can be on the high side for the main resorts. But for the more budget conscious, there are some cheaper options available in the Busuanga area.

One of these is Kokosnuss Garden Resort. With prices starting from around £30($38) a night, this offers great value for the traveller on a budget.

This family resort provides information for a number of activities. From walking and hiking, to the famous diving around Japanese wrecks from WWII. Options abound for all the family, or the solo traveller, to enjoy.

One of the popular options from any of the resorts, are the island tours. These operate daily and take you around the local island of your choice. The main tours are to Coron, Culion and Calauit. But with over 80 islands in the Philippines, your choice is vast if you have the finances to go.

Many of the islands are completely uninhabited and present an opportunity to explore untouched habitats. The advantage with these desert islands, is that you know you will get the boat home afterwards! To experience these tropical havens, simply hire your own boat for the day and arrange the fee with the captain.

For a more comprehensive exploration of the territory, the hotels in Palawan province are dotted around some of the other islands. So you are not restricted to any one area. You can arrange transport to several islands in the course of your holiday.

For viewing wildlife, the island of Calauit is your primary destination. It is a sanctuary of 3700 hectares with African and Palawan wildlife present. Local animals such as the mouse deer, Calamian deer and Palawan peacocks cohabit the reserve with African giraffes, zebras and impalas.

Another option for the more aquatic minded traveller is the diving. There are some truly amazing dives available around the Busuanga. The wrecks of the Japanese fleets range from 5metres – 40metres down. The size varies from 40metre long gunboat wrecks, to the 168metre long Okikawa Maru tanker wreck. The sheer variation in size of these allows much exploration for wreck divers.

After a long day you could do worse than visit the hot springs at Makinit. These are natural springs that bubble from the mountainside into the sea. The temperature tends to be a steady 39-40 degrees Celsius. They are accessed by hiring a tricycle to take you there from Coron.

The volcanic mix of nutrients in the water will cleanse your skin, and relax your muscles after a hard day of hiking or diving. All of these options, and more, await you as part of the attractions in Palawan province. All you need to do is pick your favourite activity in paradise.
