Coron Island

Coron Island – The hidden gem of Palawan Province

Coron Island is a National Reserve in the province of Palawan.  It is one of the main Palawan attractions for its idyllic seascapes and mountains. It has access via boat from Coron city, on the mainland.

The hotels in the Palawan province provide daily tours to Coron island. Even with virtually no commercialisation the island is still a famous tourist destination. In fact, the total population of the island is only around 2000 people. These are mostly natives as the island is the Ancestral home of the Tagbanua.

The island has some of the most beautiful scenery in terms of its lagoons and lakes. The water is turquoise blue and green depending on the location. It is as clear as glass and has visibility down 20 feet or more. The main tourist areas are the lakes on the island.

These two lakes are called Lake Kayangan and Lake Barracuda.

Lake Kayangan is about 10 minutes up a steep slope, burrowed into the mountain walls. It is always busy, being described as, “like a mall parking lot at noon”. Not ideal if you are looking for peaceful get away, but the scenery and gorgeous lake will make the crowds well worth it.

Lake Barracuda is reached by climbing over some rocky walls that end in the water of the lake. It is a mixture of fresh and salt waters. The temperature changes dramatically between these layers, and can be as high as 38 degrees Celsius. The fresh water is on the top layer, around 4 meters deep.

The name of the lake is due to the Barracuda found there. It is technically classed as a freshwater lake. But it is connected to the sea via an underwater cave. This is the cause of the thermal differences in the lake. Other fish that can be found in addition to the Barracuda include shrimps, gobies and groupers.

With these sorts of attractions on your doorstep, the question would be what Palawan hotels would be best, to access this island?

There are a number available, but as mentioned earlier, those in Coron town are the easiest access. The one factor that seems to come up frequently is lack of wifi. But if you are on holiday to get away from the world that is a good thing.

Another attraction in Palawan Province, at Coron Island, would be the diving. There are 14 Japanese WWII wrecks on the sea bed around the island. These are easily accessible from 5 metres, to 40 metres down. The visibility is around 10-15metres on average.

For those who prefer being above the water, there is Banol Beach. A small sheltered beach for relaxing in. Due to restrictions in place by the locals, there are only a few areas accessible for tourists. This restricts options slightly, but the areas that are available are truly exquisite in their beauty.

On the whole Coron Island is more for the adventurous traveller. But if you are willing to go that little bit extra, you will find views and treasures to last you a lifetime.
