Our second day in Vinales we decided to go to the beach, only 60k away at Cayo Jutias. The road was rough but worth the visit. Cayo Jutias has lovely white sand, warm water with lots of swimming. There were a few restaurants there too.
We left our casa and headed off in our little rental car at 9.10am on a reasonbably nice road. The road takes you through a couple of small towns, one of which is a mining town.
After you skirt the outside of the small town of Santa Lucia the road turns really rough and it’s slow going all the way to the beach now.
We arrived at 11.45 ready for a swim and cool down. There were plenty of beach chairs and a few umbrellas which can be hired for $5 CUC per person.
You also get to use the bathrooms which are located in the big restaurant. We didn’t bother as we knew we wouldn’t be there that long and found a bit of shade further down the beach.
The sea was really warm and excellent for safe swimming. We did a bit of exploring as we could see on the map that the beach went on for quite some way around a point. After about 10mins we gave up and turned back, there wasn’t much to see and the mossies were really starting to get to us now.
Tour Tips
Bring lots of mossie spray!
Eating Experience
We had lunch at the big restaurant, Fish on the iron the dish was called.
We were assured it would be fresh. But I have to say this was one of THE worst meals we’ve had in Cuba.
No way was it fresh plus cooked to death, I couldn’t eat it.
I think the $2 ham sandwich and $1.50 CUC beers next door would have been heaps better!
Our Opinion
It’s a nice day out if you have to time to make the journey, which will take you longer than a normal ride because of the rough roads. Don’t eat at the big restaurant, try the smaller one next door. And take lots of mossie spray and sun tan lotion. Nice white sandy beach.
