Castropol

Excellent views of the Malecon and sunset from Castropol Restaurant top floor dining room. Watch the American cars and people pass by. Great value at Castropol Restaurant, plenty of dishes on the menu to choose from.

We wanted to watch the sunset on the Malecon from higher above the ground so off we went to Castropol Restaurant to their upper floor dining room. There are about 10 tables out on their balcony but only around 5 of them are right on the edge with a better view of things.

Get there early as it fills up fast, we arrived at 5.30pm and got the second to last table.

There are two restaurants at Castropol, one on the ground floor and the other a flight of stairs up. On the way up you’ll pass a very nice bakery tucked away in the middle, very old location. Now that we’ve seen this we’ll be back for coffee and cake plus a lot of people and car watching from street level.

There were plenty of waiters and waitresses around and service was very fast and efficient. Drinks are a bit expensive for this type of restaurant with a Mojito costing $4.50 CUC. However the beers were only $2.50 CUC, more beers please!

Eating Experience

A complimentary basket of fresh sliced bread with some soft butter arrived before our meal, this was nice. You wouldn’t really want to order an entree as you’d be too full I think as the meals are pretty generous. The couple next to us ordered entrees and they were as big as a main meal for us.

We we’re that hungry, it was early, so we ordered the Chicken breast with Parmesan Sauce on Tomato Pulp – whatever that meant! Cost was $9.80 CUC. Sorry forgot to take a photo of this dish. There were four pieces of chicken, perfect for sharing, we did order Pilaff Rice $2.75 CUC but was a bit dry as there was no sauce with the Chicken.

The chicken was deep fried, really well I have to say, nice and tender, then a sprinkle of Parmesan all sitting on top of a tiny bit of pasta with a bit of tomato sauce.

Our Opinion

Perfect location for watching the sunset on the Malecon. The food is not overpriced and pretty good considering you are in Cuba. Excellent service and great views. Would go again.
