Man the Mojito’s at El Chanchullero are packed with punch, big and only $2.25 CUC! El Chanchullero is funky, new and really busy, the food is excellent and cheap.
On our way home one night we walked pasted the skinny entrance of El Chanchullero Restaurant, what made us stop was how busy it was and the vibe coming out of the place. Hip young Cubans where enjoying dinner and drinks and it was busy. Anywhere this busy in Cuba must be onto something and the locals knew it.
Next night we made a bee line straight for El Chanchullero restaurant and were very lucky to get a table upstairs. Come early, there was a que outside when we left. Mood lighting makes the place feel warm and cozy, tables were just far enough apart to feel like you were in your own space.
We were given the typed paper menu which was all in Spanish, obviously they don’t get that many tourists – yet! Fortunately the waiter spoke pretty good English and recommended a chicken dish and a pork dish, starting off with a Mojito each. Wow these were the best Mojito’s we have ever had in Havana, man did they pack a punch. We could only drink one and were definitely feeling the effects.
As mentioned we couldn’t read the menu so went off what the waiter suggested. The prices were cheap at $5.50 CUC for my Pork in Tomato dish and $5.50 CUC for the Chicken Pimento dish. Those delicious Mojito`s were only $2.25 CUC each.
We were so excited when the dishes arrived to see all that salad! Not even the most expensive restaurant we’ve been to (with mains at $25 CUC) provided this much salad and fresh tomatoes, cucumber, avocado and carrot.
I realise it’s pretty basic for our standards but for Cuba this is totally awesome! To top it off both our meals were supurb, tender meats in both dishes. The use of garlic and herbs was a refreshing change from most of the bland meals we’ve had.
Value for money this is hands down the best restaurant in Havana, with excellent tasty meals, cheap big Mojitos and a funky vibe to go with it. Come early as it’s the latest hang out for the locals.
