Our visit to the Pink Flamingos at Laguna Guanaroca just outside Cienfuegos was a great tour. After a short nature walk, then a boat ride we were up close to these stunning birds.
Driving from Cienfuegos
After an easy 13km drive from Cienfuegos in our little rental car we arrived at Laguna Guanaroca 30mins later. We were told to get there early so arrived at 8am however it didn’t open until 8.30am, then a bit of a wait around for who knows what, and the tour begins around 9.45am. I guess in peak season you should arrive at 8am as there would be loads more people.
Tour Experience
There were only two other couples and a French man doing the tour with us. After paying our $10 CUC each, we were guided on a short bush walk, where plants used to make maracas and other trees were pointed out along the way.
A guy in a very small boat with bad paddles rowed us very slowly and silently across the lagoon with water so still it was like glass. You should see some herons and pelicans perched in the mangroves.
When we reached the flamingos we admired their pink feathers and long elegant necks and watched as they flue in and landed. They were still quite a way away making it hard to get a really good photo. Definitely take your big expensive zoom lens on this tour.
Our Opinion
For $10 CUC each you get a 90 min tour out to see the Flamingos, which we thought was was pretty good value and quite close to town.
