How to Get There
The Havana Rum Museum is very easy to find all you have to do is walk down to the water front and along San Pedro Road, which happens to be where all the action is. Like the ferry building where you catch the ferry to Casablanca and walk up to the forts or walk around Plaza San Francisco de Asis and Plaza Vieja.
When to Get There
Get to the rum museum in the morning before the museum starts to warm up beyond boiling point as there is no air con in there.
Tour Experience
Our tour guide Daine took the English speaking group through the old building and explained every detail of rum making as if she had worked there many years ago. The museum had old equipment dating back hundreds of years, which made the tour more authentic, this was not a museum just full of tatty old photos.
The highlight for me was the unbelievable model of a sugar refinery, this will leave the biggest model rail way in Napier, NZ for dead.
Free Drink
At the end of the tour we tried an eye dropper full of Havana’s most popular 7-year Rum, very disappointing quanity as we were told the tour included a free drink.
Our sum up of the Rum Museum
At $7 CUC per person for the half hour tour, two eye droppers worth, would have given me the opportunity to enjoy the full flavours of the 7 year old Rum and I would have brought one bottle at $16.90 CUC.
It’s very hard to find 7 year old Rum in the shops around Havana, only a hand full of bars sell it. At least they did not apply the thumb screws to make you, buy, buy, buy.
In all, we really did enjoy the tour of the Rum Museum and through it was pretty good value for the half hour tour at $7 CUC per person including a taste of 7 year old rum.
